News Happy New Year from Save Our Sunol. We are happy to report that the Water Temple restoration has begun. The warehouse at the Oakland Museum has been chosen as the location for the precise and tedious process of tile preparation and restoration. These activities are led by Lena Chien, the chief architectural engineer. Tim Dayonot, the SFPUC’s government and public affairs officer, reports that their budget for fiscal year 1998 provides for another one million plus dollars for this project. Tim also mentioned that he, Dennis Normandy, and Mayor Willie Brown will be leaving in early February for a visit to the Philippines. Dennis has been appointed by the Mayor to chair the San Francisco/Manila Sister City Committee. We plan to have an SFPUC/Sunol Working Group meeting after their trip to discuss plans for a fundraising project for the temple restoration fund. SOS will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998 at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of Sunol Glen School. There are several environmental issues on our agenda. Jeff Miller from the Alameda Creek Alliance will speak to us about his group’s efforts to reintroduce salmon and trout into Alameda Creek. He also has some valuable environmental information of particular interest to SOS. There is another newly formed group, the Safe Water Committee, that has been studying the impacts of a reverse osmosis process to be initiated by Zone 7 for its water customers. The committee is preparing a position paper and will have it available to the press and the public next month. Committee spokesperson and valley chemist, Dr. Geoff Cooper, has voiced some grave reservations about this proposal. Geoff is also the chair of the Pleasanton Planning Commission. He has agreed to speak to us at our Feb. SOS meeting to explain his objections to this complex and controversial issue. I will have some written materials to pass out at our Jan. 28 meeting. Never underestimate the power of the pen! In her Jan. 15 column in the Valley Times, Bree James stated that SOS needed some legal work done to complete our tax deductible status. I am very happy to report that I received a phone call the same morning the column appeared, from a Pleasanton attorney who has offered some pro bono work for SOS. He has been following our quarry struggle and our successful efforts with the temple restoration. We will introduce our new benefactor at our meeting. We also will seek suggestions for updating our Web page We are pleased to see so many “Stop the Renaissance Faire” signs in and around Sunol. It certainly should be obvious to Alameda County and the Renaissance Entertainment Corporation that this large scale commercial venture is unwanted by most Sunolians. Bob Frillman will update us with recent Ren Faire activities and announcements. New members, ideas and comments are welcomed. Refreshments and friendly conversation will follow the general membership meeting.
