The hardest thing to understand is why we can understand anything at all.

Greetings from Save Our Sunol.  We observed our fifth annual Memorial Day ceremony, picnic and ice cream social in the Sunol Glen school yard on May 30. Our commemoration for departed loved ones included poems, songs, flowers and special remembrances by persons in attendance. It was a warm and loving ceremony. We appreciate the timely poem by Bree James and the nostalgic music of Deborah Knox.

We all enjoyed the picnic and ice cream social. Special thanks to Nancy and Greg Davis and Bill and Marlene Rebello for donations of ice cream and soft drinks and to Rosemary Chang for her delicious home made hot fudge topping. Cindy Frillman decorated the area with a patriotic theme and Deborah Knox and Bob Skaggs entertained us with music from the seventies. We were happy to have Lena Ch’en and her family join us. Lena is a PUC architectural engineer and is the project manager for the water temple restoration.

Last issue, I mentioned that we had been negotiating with representatives from the San Francisco PUC and Mission Valley Rock. We had one more session in early June and we from SOS felt that we were offering some meaningful alternatives and options to the negotiation process. PUC Commissioner Dennis Normandy was also encouraged with the progress being made.  Mission Valley Rock, however, was not in agreement and quit the entire process.  Tim Such and I spoke before the PUC Commissioners and urged them to continue the dialogue with Save Our Sunol. We are hopeful that this will happen soon.

The procedure for the water temple restoration seems to be moving along. The PUC has selected bids for some of the reconstructive work and the tile restoration for the dome has been underway for many months at the Oakland Art Museum warehouse.  The first phase is due for completion by the end of the year.

The Renaissance Faire is planning to stage its theme park this year in Vacaville at the previous Nut Tree site.  They are also planning a Halloween event at the same site. Their future destination may be in the city of Antioch in the year 2000.

Save Our Sunol did not meet in June and will probably not meet in July because many members are taking vacations. However, we are being vigilant about the Sunol Valley Agricultural Enhancement Plan that could change the housing density from its present one per hundred acres to one per twenty with eighteen of the twenty acres in agriculture in perpetuity. We are favoring a county initiative that would protect us from development. It permits growth only within existing city urban boundary lines where the services for sewer, water, fire and law enforcement are already in place. Lance Parrow, Derek Johnson and Dan Henriques have agreed to work on the initiative

Finally, I urge everyone to check out our web site,  www. sunol. org. Derek Johnson has some wonderful pictures of our valley. They remind me of the real mission of Save Our Sunol.  It is our dedication and comittment to the preservation of the rural environment and our unique quality of life here in Sunol.
